Large animal models for preclinical studies of heart failure
SCIREQ & emka Technologies hosted a virtual webinar on Large Animal Models for Preclinical Studies of Heart Failureon November 12th 2024.
In this session, Dr. Moctezuma-Ramirez presented the development of their percutaneous myocardial infarction model in pigs, designed to mimic human heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). He discussed its impact on left ventricular function and explore how targeted gene therapy—specifically the knockdown of Hippo signaling—helps to mitigate post-myocardial infarction arrhythmic events in this large animal model.
Additionally, Dr. Moctezuma-Ramirez shared their innovative surgical technique for implanting the emka easyTEL+ telemetry device while preserving the groin, offering a less invasive solution for continuous monitoring in large animals.
The session concluded with insights into the ongoing development of a multifactorial heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) model, addressing the complexity of this condition.

Angel Moctezuma-Ramirez, Research Scientist at The Texas Heart Institute
Dr. Ramirez is graduated from IEST-Anahuac. He joined a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute to learn about preclinical surgical and interventional cardiovascular research. Dr. Ramirez is currently reasearch scientist, working on heart failure therapies, mechanical circulatory assist devices (e.g., LVADs, TAH), development of procedural techniques in research, health care outcomes, cardiovascular procedures, and minimally invasive procedures.
Large animal telemetry
easyTEL+ implants
easyTEL+ is a fully implantable digital system, that transmits physiological data from conscious freely moving laboratory animals. It can be remotely managed and configured.
Intended for use in preclinical research (primarily toxicology, pharmacology and safety pharmacology studies) and biodefense, the easyTEL+ implants are ideal for large animals > 1 kg.
Various models offer the ability to continuously record Biopotential (ECG, EEG, EMG, EOG)*, Blood pressure, Respiration**, Temperature and Activity.
